Finals Fever up North
Date of Event : Thu Jun 7, 2018 1:44PM

The finals showdown of the North Queensland Zone of the Beastwear National Indoor Cricket League is headed for Mackay this Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June at the Mackay Indoor Sports stadium.

Mackay Magic, Cairns Sharks, Rockhampton Redbacks and Townsville Wildcatz have all now played 3 rounds each in a cyclone-interrupted season, and the race is on for the right to play Townsville Wildcatz in the Grand Final at 10am Sunday.

The last round games will be played Saturday and this will determine the final placings for Sundays fixtures of 3rd v 4th and 1st v 2nd, the latter being the game that determines which team heads to Action Indoor Sports Salisbury in Adelaide for the national finals commencing on Friday 30 August to Sunday 2 September.

The current ladder positions are;

  • Townsville Wildcatz:  57
  • Cairns Sharks:  34
  • Rockhampton Redbacks:  29.5
  • Mackay Magic:  5.5

Townsville Wildcatz has this year been further strengthened by the welcoming of ACT player Brock Winkler who has been dominating with the bat to date as well as boasting current QLD representative players including Hayden Searle, Jamie Heit and Jake Rebgetz. The experienced Kyle Dearness will again lead the team as this year they have gone through the series undefeated.

Cairns Sharks have had a stellar series to date led by Mark Ellis, Sean Prior, Dan Freebody and Tim Quinn all having had excellent contributions across their games played. Cairns are in a great position to make up for last year’s poor showing in the last round and would be favourites to finish 2nd and meet the Wildcatz team in the Grand Final.

Rockhampton Redbacks have had a few impressive wins early in the series but must now make up for their losses in Townsville in the last rounds and will require some solid contributions to make up ground on Cairns if they wish to leapfrog them into the Grand Final. Nicholas Lotarski, Greg Tootell and Tim Reid have been the Redbacks best to date. The experienced David Buchanan and Trent Sorohan will play a big part in the weekend’s games and hopefully will see some pressure put on all other rivals.

Mackay Magic has had limited success this year through player unavailability issues and while they have been close in some games they have failed to accumulate much needed skins to ensure that stayed in striking distance of the higher teams. Chris Ault, Andrew McNichol and Russ Counsell have been tremendous throughout this season and the return of Grant Trone and Jakob Frerichs last round certainly turned the tables to gain some skins. They also managed to edge out a draw against Rocky in a nail biter the last time these two teams met.
